Here’s how to create a more child friendly bathroom that can accommodate the needs of your family as it grows:
1. Non-slip flooring
One of the biggest considerations (perhaps THE biggest) when you’re designing and creating a child friendly bathroom with children in mind is safety. It’s a given that any electrical appliances (hair dryers, electric shavers, etc.), sharp objects and medicines should be kept up high and stored in a locked cupboard.
In addition, your bathroom flooring should be as non-slip as possible. That’s because wet bathroom floors can present a real safety hazard for kids. The good news is that you can significantly reduce the risk of your children slipping over in your bathroom by installing some simple non-slip matts, which are considerably more cost effective than replacing your existing tiles.
2. Step-up stools
Whether it’s washing their hands or sitting on the toilet, your children will likely struggle because of their height. This is where step-up stools come in. These simple, cost effective additions to any bathroom can make a huge difference, reducing the need for your kids to overreach or stand on something less stable to get their things.
Wooden step-up stools look nice, but you need to be aware that they might go mouldy when placed in a damp bathroom environment. For this reason, plastic step-up stools are often preferred. Just make sure they are placed on non-slip matts to avoid accidents.
3. Stick with a regular height toilet
While it can be tempting to get a lower toilet so that your kids can use it more easily, you need to remember that they are still growing and will be able to use a regular height toilet in the not too distant future. That’s why it’s always advisable to stick with a regular height toilet and let your children use their step-up stools to reach it.
4. Their own tidy hooks
Make your kids feel extra special and important by installing some simple tidy hooks at a height they can reach without any issues. Look for hooks that are colourful or feature their favourite cartoon/TV character. Such hooks are perfect for hanging small towels, their toothbrush, anything really and help to teach your kids about the importance of organisation.
5. Add removable, cost effective accessories
As we’ve already mentioned, your kids are constantly growing, which is why it’s a good idea to add accessories that can be easily removed in the future. Little touches like a child-oriented shower curtain, cartoony stickers on your bath tiles and / or a kids’ bathmat will turn bath time from a chore into something enjoyable. Plus, they can all be removed / replaced as your children grow and their tastes / preferences change.
